March 12, 2013 — Parents, grandparents, teachers… do you know any artistic kids? Then hurry! Just 10 days left in the “Doodle 4 Google” logo design competition, open to U. S. students, grades K – 12.
With a $30,000 college scholarship on the line, a $50,000 grant to the winning childs’ school, not to mention a host of other awards and prizes, this is one contest worth entering.
If you ever were on the Google home page and saw something other than the traditional Google logo, then you’ve seen a Google Doodle.
About the Doodle 4 Google Competition
Now, in its sixth year, this annual contest challenges kids to create a likeness of the Google logo, this year based on the theme “My Best Day Ever…”
Criteria for judging logo entries include “artistic merit, creativity, theme communication and appropriateness of the supporting statement.” Judging is done by Google employees and a guest panel of celebrities, who whittle down the entries to 50 State Winners; and then the public is invited to vote for their favorite.

Last year, over 114,000 submissions were received from all 50 states. The winning entry came from a 7-year old, Dylan Hoffman, whose entry is shown above.
Rules for Entry
Google also runs similar competitions in other countries, but this particular contest is for U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents enrolled in a U.S. school, kindergarten through grade 12. The deadline is March 22nd, 2013.
About entries, according to their website, “Eligible Doodles must be two-dimensional and scannable. This includes any artistic material that will remain flat on the page. This could include: paint, pencils, crayons, markers, chalk, pastels, charcoal, or cray-pas. Computer-generated images are also accepted.”
Artwork can be uploaded or mailed, but there is an official entry form (downloadable from their website) and there are plenty of rules. For complete details see:

Where To Find the Winning Entries Displayed
The winning entry will be posted on the Google homepage on May 23rd, for 24 hours, and the top 50 entries will be on exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, May 22 through July 14. I can’t wait!
In fact, the entire topic of Google Doodles and living logos has intrigued me for a while, and I’ve been meaning to write about it, so look for more on this topic in this blog in coming days. Meantime, I wanted to be sure to let you know about this exciting competition.
