“Gangnam Style” Viral Video Parodies Life After Hurricane Sandy

Parody of Gangnam Style viral video - poking fun at LIPA after Hurricane Sandy

This parody of the viral “Gangnam Style” video has gone viral itself. Screen shot shown – watch the video below.

Hurricane Sandy may have come and gone, but in her wake, tens of thousands of people are dealing with damaged or destroyed homes and businesses, lost possessions, jobs and even lives. In Long Island, as well as many other areas, many have survived the storm, but are still without power. And that’s the topic of today’s blog.

When All Else Fails, Laughter Helps

Not to make light of a tragedy. Nor am I saying anything negative about the dedicated utility and public service men and women who have worked so hard to restore power, lights and normalcy.

I am just saying that sometimes laughter helps. In that spirit, I’d like to share a video so funny that I thought it worth bringing to your attention. It’s a parody of the hugely popular “Gangnam Style” video – only this version pokes fun at the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA).

Gangnam Style

If you’ve never seen the original Gangnam Style video, which went viral this past August, check it out. South Korean pop artist PSY knows about a thing or two about catchy beats, funky clothes, funny dance moves and special effects.

It’s no wonder that as of November 20th, 2012, the original “Gangnam Style” video has been watched over 770 million times on YouTube and is the site’s second-most watched video ever. Stats, incidentally, are courtesy of Wikipedia – a site where you can learn much more about this little bit naughty and definitely over-the-top video, and where I learned that the original Gangnam Style video was originally meant to be a parody itself.

Now, Watch the LIPA Parody

Now, you’re ready to watch the LIPA parody version of the Gangnam Style video, by humorists at Long Island’s WBLI radio station 106.1. Got to say, their lyrics, which poke fun at life after Sandy, are even funnier than the original. (Well actually, the original lyrics are in Korean and the English translations make no sense. So what I mean to say here is that this video is even funnier than the original.) And, needless to say, this video has also gone viral.

If you’re in the mood for even more fun, you may enjoy the 11 best parodies of Gangnam Style, compiled by The Week. (Note that their article was published on October 20th, before Hurricane Sandy hit, otherwise, no doubt the LIPA video would have made their “hits parade.”)

In coming days, I’ll have more to say about the Gangnam Style video. But for now, sit back, watch, and hopefully enjoy. Because after all, laughter is the best medicine.
